Translation Project - Multi Ethnic Genetic Information

The London IDEAS GKP Translation Project, a collaboration with the Genetic Interest Group: This project developed and delivered patient genetic information in the principal linguistic languages of the minorities of London; GIGs role in this project promoted public and user engagement with GKP and forged networks with patient support groups.

The patient information leaflets that have been developed by this project are list below and are available to be used free of charge.

Please note:
These leaflets are intended for issue by clinical genetics departments to their patients. The information in these leaflets should not be used for diagnosis. If you think you or your children may be at risk from a genetic disorder in your family, please discuss this with your GP first. Your GP might then refer you to a clinical genetics service.
We recommend that you take the time to read these notes before you use the library for the first time.
Go to Library

Notes on content:

  • We believe each file is an accurate translation of the English version, according to our protocol.
  • Key words appear in English at their first use.
  • There are three types of file:
      • letters for clinic admin
      • forms for patient language needs and information
      • patient information leaflets, with glossaries for patients and interpreters where relevant

Quality assurance:

A resource consisting of over 70 patient information leaflets developed by the NW Thames Regional Genetics Centre has been used as a basis for this project. We have followed CHIQ guidelines where possible, and optimised the English to minimise ambiguities and idiomatic expressions for translation, while retaining clinical accuracy. These optimised English versions are available for download, along with the translations. We have applied a thorough quality assurance protocol including checking by clinical staff, community consultation with bilingual groups to ensure the content and the translations are culturally appropriate and accessible, and discussion with patient support groups.
View protocol.

Third parties wishing to translate the English leaflets into further languages are encouraged to do so following the protocol published above, and to acknowledge the authors of the protocol when doing so (London IDEAS, NW Thames Regional Genetics Centre and the Genetic Interest Group).

Notes on format:

  • All files are supplied as pdfs (apart from Somali and Sylheti which are audio MP3 files). It is not intended that issuing clinics should edit these files (download Adobe pdf reader here).
  • All files have been prepared to be readable based on an A4 printed page size.
  • Text files and letters (but not glossaries) have been prepared with a space at the top for issuing clinics to print their own logo or contact details if they wish.
  • Letters have spaces (usually identified in English within the translation) for specific input (e.g. date, Consultant name, location). These can be filled in by hand, or by printing over the pdf.
  • In printing out a file, issuing clinics accept responsibility for the accuracy of reproduction.
  • Each file has a number and a title. Leaflets and their specific glossaries share the same number.
  • Each page of each file has a header identifying the file and the language of translation.
  • Forms for return and questionnaires have tick-boxes (labelled in English) to aid in understanding patient responses.
  • Where there is no accurate translated word in common use in the target language, the English word will appear transliterated into the language, in the text.

Use in clinic:

  • The Genetic Interest Group does not provide paper copies of these files: you are free to make your own copies so long as you do not charge for their use.
  • The files are downloadable as full language sets (i.e.every file translated into one language, plus English versions), or as individual files. We recommend downloading full language sets and saving to CD for ease of use, and repeat printing, within the clinic.
  • Leaflet 28 is a generic stand-alone glossary which is designed to help clinicians in consultations where an interpreter is present.
  • The best print quality is assured if you set "page scaling" to "None" in the Adobe Print menu.
  • Our community consultation groups suggest it helps to have the leaflet-specific glossary as well as the leaflet itself, and it may help to have the English version and the translated version of both the leaflet and glossary.
  • Somali and Sylheti files are audio only as these languages are spoken rather than written.

Disclaimer:
These leaflets are intended for issue by clinical genetics departments to their patients. The information in these leaflets should not be used for diagnosis. If you think you or your children may be at risk from a genetic disorder in your family, please discuss this with your GP first. Your GP might then refer you to a clinical genetics service.
